Why do we feel so compelled to judge people by their appearance rather than by their attributes and talents?
It was the sixties and a group of producers, educators, sociologists and the like were meeting at a fine hotel to discuss the plans for an educational program. It was in the fledgling stages and no one was sure if the idea would even take off. As these %26quot;fine, upstanding%26quot; people came together to discuss the plans of this program which would eventually reach legendary proportions, a man walked in. Somewhat bedraggled, with a beard, leather vest and sandals he caused a bit of a stir and some nervousness among the other attendees. At the time a terroroist group, %26quot;The Weathermen.%26quot; was very active in bombing buildings and creating havoc. This man strongly resembled their look and dress.
One of the attendees, the leader of the group, kept looking over her shoulder and finally nervouslly asked her companion, %26quot;How do we know that that man isn%26#039;t here to kill us?%26quot;
Her companion answered, %26quot;He%26#039;s not, he%26#039;s Jim Henson.%26quot;
Why do we feel so compelled to judge people by their appearance rather than by their attributes and talents?
Interesting story. Given the situation, most people would have been nervous. Wouldn%26#039;t you?
Maybe it%26#039;s part of what keeps us alive. Being aware of differences in our environment protects us from harm. We really need to see what%26#039;s out of the ordinary to be ready to defend ourselves. Very Darwinian.
It takes time to get enough information to get the real picture of what someone is all about. Appearance is just one of the first things we react to in forming an initial judgment about someone or something in deciding if they might harm us.
Reply:Because what we see has an impact upon us, and many in society are driven by visual stimulation first and foremost.
It doesn%26#039;t make it right or better, and it%26#039;s good to see a person like yourself asking a question like this. Ultimately, your question is what fuels thought that should make our world a better place for everyone.
As your example well indicates, one cannot judge a book by its cover. Yet it is so sad that many still do this and don%26#039;t take the time to know what the essence of somebody is before pre-judging them solely upon how they look.
Reply:Television brought us up that way, showed people that it was easy to kill, do drugs, do crimes, judge people. More or less tell us that good looking people%26#039;s *hit don%26#039;t stink, WRONG, probably stinks the worst.
Reply:It takes too long to get to the soul of everyone you meet. You meet too many people in a day to possibly get to know them well enough to formulate a judgment on anything else but appearance in most cases.
Most people do judge books by their covers -- if they didn%26#039;t,. all those blurb writers and cover artists would be out of a job. (So would all those stylists that celebraties employ.)
Reply:As human beings, we don%26#039;t pace oursleves, we just rush in like a bull in a china chop.
Instead of taking the time to find out what a person is like on the inside, we are quick to judge what they are like by looking at their physical appearance.
It is something quite unavoidable, and everyone does it, often not even realising they are. If people took more time to find out about a person%26#039;s inner attributes, the world would be a very different place. Unfortunately, it is not in our nature to do so.
We are only human after all!
Reply:we are a society of pettiness
Reply:Appearances matter, because we rarely tap into our intuition which readily offers us info about the person at soul level, so we have to rely on external sources of information about the person.
Perhaps we do the same with ourselves. Giving our appearance more importance than the strength of our character or our soul for that matter, we think appearances matter in the real world so they do for us, after all we create our own reality.
Unlike Jim Benson of course, the man who thought what he was good enough as he is within, as babies think. You never see a new born baby fussing over his looks, or his wrinkles, he is happy just to be born again.
No wonder, we go to extra ordinary lengths to save our appearances, even go for an image makeovers, forgetting that it is the inner you that matters, in the end.

And the main question of judging, especially refers to women from my standpoint. Two men meet and they shake hands and say,%26quot;How ya doing? Nice weather.%26quot; But women meet and they only think to themselves,%26quot;Oh my God, look what she%26#039;s wearing. Who does she think she is?%26quot; Their whole attitute is different to one another. I don%26#039;t understand why society has made this? It this true of other countries? I try so hard not to do this, and still find myself doing this at times. I would love to hear some more insight on the matter.
Reply:Your appearance is the mirror of your soul. You can tell the difference between a homeless person and a succesful business person by the way they dress. Your dress code tells everything about you.
Reply:Is appearance not an attribute? I think one%26#039;s dress can tell us a little about them. After all, many people dress a certain way for that very reason, to tell the world a little about themselves. For instance, maybe Jim Henson was a free spirit type of guy. The problem comes when people put too much stock in that one attribute. Also, problems occur when the judging person does not really know what a certain type of dress signifies.

Question about Rainbows flip flops?
Alright well you see I was wondering if it is possible to clean the premier double layer arch leather rainbows. The sandals get dirty really easily and I was wondering if I could put them in the washing machine or if there was any other way to clean them. Please reply and thanks!
Question about Rainbows flip flops?
Do not put them in the washer.
Gently, in the sink rub them with lukewarm soap and water, but if you rub violently or put them in the washer or anything like that, it will ruin the leather, so unless you want to have to buy a whole new pair of them, just be gentle!
Reply:Scrub then with that bathrrom tile cleaner.
Reply:Go to Walmart, and but another pair for 97 cents
Reply:buy a new pair and always wash your feet when you take them off
Reply:You can try to clean them, but u may scuff it more. just buy a new pair
Reply:Have you ever seen this cool round brush battery operated made by Tide? They sell it everywhere, Walmart, Target, Kmart, it was included on a soap purchase I made, I think @ Costco, anyway, if you use Spray N Wash, comes in a green bottle (it%26#039;s the best stain remover) and use the brush, or really any other brush, and rinse out, they end up looking like new. I did that to my pink Nine West sandals, they had clusters of iridescent squares that looked like rainbows, and changed colors in the light, like sequences. any how if you use that you%26#039;ll be happy

What kind of shoes should I wear?
Okay -- so I bought a super cute jersey knit halter dress (Poly/Spand blend), and I can%26#039;t figure out which shoes to wear. The dress is a basic black knee length with no detail, and a deep V neck. I%26#039;m pairing it with an auqa beaded shrug... would black patent leather high heeled sandals with closed backs (in patent leather of course) put me on the worst dressed list? Any other suggestions for shoes?
Thanks!
What kind of shoes should I wear?
I%26#039;m not entirely sure about the shoes that you%26#039;ve chosen- they%26#039;re not to my personal taste however, if you like them, you%26#039;ll be pleased to know that they%26#039;re not unfashionable.
Have you considered a basic black slingback shoe? The shape of the straps would compliment the halterneck of your dress, and a slingback is always classy and chic.

I%26#039;m always a fan of Mary Jane shoes with knit dresses- makes the whole thing seems feminine and girly:

Plus, they%26#039;re super %26quot;in%26quot; right now.
The links are UK links but they%26#039;re just for ideas.
I hope you find a gorgeous pair to wear :)

Help with rainbows!!?
I want to purchase some rainbows for this summer. I have a few questions.
Are they going out?
Are they worth the money?
Also some rainbows sold in stores are flat, http://www.journeys.com/catalog_detail.a...
While others are not.http://www.amazon.com/Rainbow-Sandals-Pr...
Am i better off with the flat ones or ones with the little bit of extra rubber??
Thanks so much for all your answers.
Help with rainbows!!?
Flat shoes are horrible for your back and your posture, your legs and feet will be in pain. Go for a sandal that has some arch support.
Honestly I think they%26#039;re ugly...I%26#039;ve never cared much for flip flops.
Reply:Rainbows don%26#039;t look like they%26#039;ve ever been in to begin with. If you ask me, they%26#039;re an overpriced knockoff of the ever hideous birkenstocks. If you%26#039;re looking for a flip flop, and are willing to lay down some cash, why not try something with a bit of a twist:
http://www.oceanminded.com/store/pc-547-...
Or something a little more casual:
http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/24390999/c/...
Or totally mix it up:

Good luck!
RE: Extra rubber
They will provide a fair bit more arch support than the completely flat one. If you%26#039;re going for it, get the extra rubber.
Reply:I think those are going out of style. sure they%26#039;re comfy, but they%26#039;re not exactly exiting or stylish. I would reccomend Havanna%26#039;s flip flops. They are cute coulours, and very cute couture.

Another Outfit-Making Question.?
Since school is rapidly approaching, I need to fine some trendy pieces/outfits to wear for back to school. There really isnt a set budget, just try not to go overboard in the price region. I adore Mischa Barton%26#039;s style; skinny jeans, embellished sandals, patent leather bags, cream colored peacoats, etc., but I cant find any items that arent really expensive. I appreciate any help. Thank you very much and have a great day =) =Þ

I need blinking shoes for my toddler. Where to get them?
Either sandals or leather sneakers, not synthetic.
I need blinking shoes for my toddler. Where to get them?
Try Walmart or Payless Shoes... just got some blinking ones from Walmart a couple of weeks ago for my daughter. Haven%26#039;t seen any in leather sneakers for kids though.

What do you think? Should I pay for the shoes? My mom took my daughther out to nordstroms with her on sunday.?
.My mom dressed my daughter in the clothes I sent with her except the shoes I sent, instead she put her on these flat leather thong sandals (my daughter is 2). These are the type of shoes grown women wear when the want to sit and just be cute. So my called me at work and told me what a great sale norstrom was having, she told me that she had a few cute outfits for my daughter in her hand. She said if she bought them, I had to reimburse her, I told her I coundn%26#039;t afford to by anything right now and my daughter has more than enough clothes for the summer, including Sunday clothes. She went on and on about how cute she would be in these outfits and how she coudn%26#039;t believe I wouldn%26#039;t get them for her. I ended giving in to a 10 dollars dress. When I picked her up that evening she had on $40 shoes and my mom demanded the money for them, I told her only get the dress. We had a huge blow out. Now she is trying to make me feel guilty about not being able to shop the way she does for her
What do you think? Should I pay for the shoes? My mom took my daughther out to nordstroms with her on sunday.?
You are correct. She is the one who bought the clothes against your wishes so she is responsible for paying for them. Now, in the interest of family, you should probably compromise. Sit down with your mother and explain that you cannot afford to shop in the way she does. You might bring up the fact that you are trying to raise your daughter to not expect new clothes and shoes just because they look cute on her. You might offer to split the cost this time, but stress that if it happens again you will not be able to reimburse her.
Reply:If your mom wanted to buy your daughter something, that should have been on her dime. Don%26#039;t pay for the shoes. If she brings it up just say, %26quot;Mom, you can do what you want with your own money but you can%26#039;t spend mine.%26quot;
Reply:Turn the other cheek! Honor your Father and your Mother. Pay for the shoes, and request the receipt, or not. If you really cannot afford the shoes, return them discreetly, otherwise keep them if the child enjoys them. Next time, leave some room for your mother%26#039;s spending on your child in your budget. It is something she enjoys doing.
I think that you are being wrong about the style. It sounds like you and your mother are battling about something entirely different. You don%26#039;t like your mother! Forgive her for past misdeeds.
Reply:Don%26#039;t pay for anything! I don%26#039;t mean to put down your ma, but if /she/ took your daughter shopping, then /she/ should pay. Making you reimburse isn%26#039;t right!
Reply:A friend of mine%26#039;s mother just did the same thing.
You were honest with her and told her that you couldn%26#039;t afford it.
And yes, she is trying to make you feel guilty...but we should all know that mothers are good at that!
If you don%26#039;t have the money to pay for $40 shoes for your 2 year old daughter, then you don%26#039;t have it. You need to tell her that. (I don%26#039;t even have money for $40 shoes for myself!)
If it%26#039;s that big of an issue for her, tell her that she can do one of two things...take the shoes back, or keep them at her house and your daughter can only wear them when she is over there.
Oh and if you don%26#039;t want your mom buying stuff that makes your daughter think she%26#039;s grown, you gotta tell her that too.
My friend%26#039;s 2 year old is going on 22!

Reply:Well if you talked about it and decided just on the dress then only pay for the dress. Let your mom eat the 40.00 for a pair of kids shoes. She wanted them and now knowing a two year old they are scuffed on the bottom and can%26#039;t be returned.

Reply:I wouldn%26#039;t pay her back, you told her you didn%26#039;t even have the money to spend on new clothes and she didn%26#039;t need any. If she wanted her to really have the clothes and shoes she would have bought them herself and not ask for you to pay her back.
Reply:Don%26#039;t pay for them... you said no when she called. So, if she did, that%26#039;s her problem. Don%26#039;t worry about making her mad. If she doesn%26#039;t like the way you clothe your daughter then she can pay for the things she thinks she %26quot;needs%26quot;.
Mothers are great for making you feel like you%26#039;re doing everything wrong and making you feel guilty about it....ignore her. Not to be mean....but facts are facts. You worry about your daughter, not your mother!
Reply:Well, you dont want your mother to be mad at you, so I would just pay for it and try to not get her to buy anything else. Let your mom know that and maybe it will work.

Well! I have already had them. Everything went fine!!?
Hello girls!! I had my boobs done. Everything went fine!!! Now I have to start having a look at some freaky fashion which is my favorite and I need some suggestions. I have found something online, well! you see? I love wearing very heavy and freaky fashion tight dresses, black leather, platform sandals, etc.
Well! I have already had them. Everything went fine!!?
First and foremost, congrats. May you find joy in them daily. I had mine reduced. I hate large ones. I hated the ulcers in my shoulders and not being able to buy pretty lacy bras. I hate the over-the-shoulder-boulder- holders I had to wear. And as far as men went...I hated talking to the top of their head because their focus and attention was on my ta-ta%26#039;s.
Hot Topix is a very good store and are also online. I too go towards the darkness. Back in the 80%26#039;s I was goth before there was even a name for it. Punk though will always be me. Crazy for a old lady with purple hair huh? Not at all.
There are many cool fashion sites. Also try typing goth into ebay with your clothing size and see what pops up. You will be amazed at the vast quantities of coolness you can find there.
Hope this helps!! -=winks=- and good luck with those girls!
ps piercings are great but be warned...men won%26#039;t take their eyes off them then!! (neither do the chics!)
Reply:i have big boobs and any low dip v cut blouses that have that satin touch are good but they have to bunch in the front by your boobs .oh yeah mine are naturally big they are a triple d baby babay.big boobs are totally dude
Reply:how about gazooks
Reply:Sounds cool. Take a look at some of the fetish sites too. They will give you some good ideas.
Reply:Maybe u should try not to dress like a stripper.....

I saw the Prophet SAW, what does that mean?
On the Night of his birthday, I saw him in my room. I asked Allah if he could open the gates of Heaven and let the Prophet out. A minute later, I SAW HIM. He was wearing a light blue shalwaar kameez(like th ones men wear)leather tan sandals, he had light brown hair, up to his shoulders, and he smiled(mouth closed)at me. He had pink cheeks. He was beautiful! And I told my dad, he came in my room, and my dad could smell the Itr!(the perfume that the Prophet wore. It smelled good, my dad said). I was a very good person back then. I was 10. Now I am 11. I used to recite the Quran a lot and stuff. I prayed(I cried while I did so)that if I could see him. and then I did my open the gates of Heaven Duaa. Now, that was months ago. I still don%26#039;t know what it means! Can some MUSLIM please help me understand?
I saw the Prophet SAW, what does that mean?
I know a hadith that say %26quot;the satan can never appear in my form in a dream%26quot;..... so this could be a true dream. But I emphasise that it was only be a dream, it didn`t actually happen in reality. Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) is dead and dead people never appear back in reality, you can only see them in dreams if you may.
There might be some message or indication for you. Some times its an indication of an acceptance of a deed. This is something personal for you, pls don`t share this on a public forum, keep it to your self, and enjoy the joy you got from seeing the dream. Continue the good deeds according to the sunnah of prophet Muhammad (SAWS), and don`t expect to see him over and over again in dream by demand, its Allah`s will and pray that you be with him in Jannah where you will actually see him inshaAllah. Correct your aqidah and do deeds according to the sunnah then inshaAllah Allah will accept your deeds.
Reply:So my dear sister Farah you mean to say now you aren%26#039;t a good person anymore? You don%26#039;t pray or recite Quran?
Reply:thats a good dream but its just a dream. Besides that, Prophet muhammad didnt wear shalwwar kameez. He stitched his own clothes.
Edit: omg u were awake!. lol. please dont talk about this anymore. if u want to belive he was prophet Muhammad, thn go ahead. I would never believe that

Flip Flops?
I am a guy and 16 and want to know what flip flops are best
I am looking at women%26#039;s flip flips (Leather thong sandals)
I am size: 12 mens what would i be women%26#039;s
Please provide links
Flip Flops?

Reply:You%26#039;d be a size 14 in women%26#039;s shoes. They r two sizes different.
Reply:You would be a size 14 in womans, because men%26#039;s sizes are two sizes smaller than woman%26#039;s. Being a size fourteen, you sometimes have to order shoes specially... so you most likely would not find large woman%26#039;s flip flops in such a large size. I would try old navy, or even macys for leather thong sandals though; they usually sell them in those two stores.
